Making Your Oral Health Routine Sustainable

Making Your Oral Health Routine SustainableConsider how your oral care products, and their disposal, impact the environment if you enjoy helping the environment whenever you can. If you want to reduce the environmental impact of your oral hygiene routine, you don't have to sacrifice good oral health.

Change The Way You Floss

A typical container of dental floss is made from nylon and contains nylon floss. The small pieces of dental floss that you discard after every flossing session add up once they are disposed of in landfills, as well as their plastic casings. The fact that flossers with plastic handles are discarded after every flossing session makes them even worse for the environment. On the market today, there are several alternatives to traditional nylon dental floss that are good for the environment. All-natural materials, like silk, are used for these flosses, which are coated in beeswax or natural plant wax. If you don't like to floss your teeth altogether, consider using a water flosser for your regular daily flossing. Research has shown that water flossers remove the same amount of plaque from teeth after brushing, if not more.

Toothpaste Packaging

Although most of today's tubes of toothpaste aren't dangerous to the environment, the tubes they come in are. Each year, about one billion tubes of toothpaste end up in landfills. Many tubes are sold even in boxes, which creates even more waste. Because these tubes are often made of both plastic and aluminum, they are difficult to recycle traditionally. Consider using a dry toothpaste powder that you can add water to at home. Glass jars and aluminum cans are common containers for these powders. Furthermore, since these powders are water-free and highly concentrated, they require less packaging.

Homemade Mouthwash

Most mouthwash bottles can be recycled when they are empty. However, it is ideal to reduce waste altogether whenever possible because the production of new plastic bottles as well as the process of shipping mouthwash to stores can have a negative impact on the environment. Make your own mouthwash at home and store it in a glass container.
