Recovering From Dental Surgery: Tips And Tricks

Posted on 8/21/2023 by OM
Recovering From Dental Surgery: Tips And TricksOral surgery just like any other operation can be an unnerving experience. Over and above taking the prescribed pain medications, it helps to know a few tricks that will make the recovery process smoother. Worry no more. Here is a sneak preview of what you can do.

Icing is the cherry on the top

It is typical to notice some swelling during the first 24 hours after the surgery. How about applying some ice to your jaw in intervals of 15 or so minutes? Assuming the surgery was done on both sides of the mouth, be sure to alternate sideways with just a single pack of ice. You do not want to overwhelm your system while at it. With some icing, the swelling should disappear within two to three days.

A clean mouth is a factor

After most surgeries, doctors advise that you keep the area clean to avoid contamination and infections. Dental surgery is no different. Good oral hygiene promotes a quicker healing timeframe. Rinse your mouth with warm saline water several times a day to ensure that your mouth stays clean. Kindly ensure that you remain tender as you brush or rinse with warm salty water. Tenderness will guarantee a lack of disruption in the clotting process.

Relax and take it easy

Take quality time to rest. If anesthesia was used, you will probably feel drowsy. As such do not engage in any strenuous physical activity or drive especially within the first 24 hours. When it is time to sleep, have with you some additional cushions so that your head remains raised. In as much as the procedure was done to just one part of the body, it can be equally tough for the rest of the body. Give your body the oomph and space to build up your strength. Sleep as frequently as your body demands until you are good to resume normal activities. Reach out to our dentists for guidance.
