If there were a list of all of the annoyingly painful things we do to our mouths, burning the roof of it would rank up there in the top 10. How many times have you sipped on a too-hot coffee or tea or realized that the slice of pizza you put in your mouth is too hot to eat? If you have ever suffered from mouth burns, there are some ways to make it feel better sooner.

The Roof of Your Mouth

What many people call the roof of your mouth is actually your palate. The hard palate is located in the front closest to your teeth, while the soft palate is directly behind it. When you burn the roof of your mouth, you usually burn the hard palate, although you can also burn the soft palate as well depending on how large the sip or bite you took was. When you bite down or sip on something, your hard palate contacts it at the same time as you bite down, which is why you usually feel it there first. Your hard palate is full of nerves as well. You need them to be able to swallow food properly.

First Aid for Mouth Burns

If you do burn the roof of your mouth, you will know immediately because of the pain you feel. Your first step should be to cool your mouth off. You can immediately suck on some ice or drink water to cool your mouth off. Now that your mouth is beginning to cool, you need to think about being kind to your mouth while it is healing from the burn. To help speed the healing, you may want to think about rinsing your mouth out with a saltwater rinse two or three times a day. You can also continue to eat cold food, such as popsicles, to soothe the burn. Rinsing out your mouth with a mouthwash designed for mouth sores can promote healing as well. Try to avoid spicy foods or acidic foods until your mouth heals.

If you think your mouth burn is severe or you are in a lot of pain, you may need to see our dentist. Call us today to make an appointment.
