A Parent's Guide to Children's Dental Health Month

At Smile More Spokane Family Dentistry, our goal is to help parents set their kids up for a lifetime of bright smiles. Here's what you need to know:

Start Early for Lifelong Healthy Smiles

Did you know your child should see a dentist by their first birthday or when their first tooth appears? Early visits help kids get comfortable with dental care and allow us to catch any potential issues early. During the first few visits, we focus on getting them comfortable sitting in the chair, laying back, and having the dentist count their teeth. We also help them get used to the sounds and environment of the dental office. We may polish their teeth and apply fluoride to help protect their smile.

Make Brushing & Flossing Fun!

Unsurprisingly, children are more likely to brush and floss if it feels like a game rather than a chore.

Try these tips:
•  Let them pick out a fun toothbrush & flavored toothpaste.
•  Use a two-minute timer or a brushing song
•  Create a sticker chart for brushing twice a day.

Watch Out for Sneaky Sugar!

Sugary beverages, sweets, and snacks can lead to cavities faster than you think. Swap out juice and soda for water or milk, and strive for fresh fruits instead of sticky candies. That's easier said than done, especially when dealing with picky toddlers. So, one of the best tips we can give you is to follow up any sugary beverages, sweet treats, and snacks with some water. Encourage your child to swish the water around to help rinse any residues away.

The Tooth Fairy Loves Healthy Teeth!

National Tooth Fairy Day is coming on February 28—a perfect time to celebrate your child's progress in keeping their teeth healthy! You can make it even more special by leaving a fun note or a "tooth receipt" from the Tooth Fairy for regular brushing and flossing.
