Your Child's First Dental Visit

Posted on 1/3/2020 by Stephanie Day
When should you schedule your child’s first dental visit?
As soon as your child’s first teeth have broken through, they are susceptible to cavities. This is why the American Dental Association recommends that your child’s first dental visit occurs after they have received their first tooth and prior to their first birthday.

How should you prepare for your child’s first dental visit?

In the weeks leading up to your child’s first dental exam, we recommend talking with your child about what they can expect during the appointment. For instance, you might let them know that the Dentist is a nice Doctor who helps them take care of their teeth and smile. Let them know that they will need to open their mouth big and wide for the Dentist to count their teeth and make sure that they are healthy and strong. You can even have your child practice in the mirror by opening their mouth and counting their own teeth.

As a parent, you can also prepare by filling out any pre-appointment paperwork our office has sent you and making a list of any questions you may have in regards to your child’s oral health.

What should you expect during the dental visit?

The process is very similar to your own dental exams. Younger children will sit on your lap in the dental chair. Our dental team may take digital x-rays of your child’s mouth and then Dr. Hill will examine your child’s teeth to ensure there is no existing decay that needs to be addressed. Next, one of our wonderful hygienists will professionally clean your child’s teeth as well as apply a fluoride treatment for optimal protection.

During the exam, our dental team will provide both you and your child with information on how to build healthy dental habits and protect their smile for years to come. This is also a wonderful opportunity to ask any questions you may have or address any potential concerns.
