Why Calling Us is So Important When Flossing Hurts

Why Calling Us is So Important When Flossing HurtsWe advise our patients to floss once a day. For some patients, this is a joyful experience. Mindlessly, they grab their floss and complete the job within a couple minutes. For others, inserting the waxy rope between their teeth is not as enjoyable. Actually, it hurts. While both patients are reducing the number of bacteria between their teeth, we hope you find yourself completing this task without pain.

It Hurts to Floss

If it does hurt when you floss your teeth, you need to know that something is probably going wrong. It is not normal for flossing to produce discomfort. However, an exception would be if you just started to floss and your gums are bleeding slightly. Our advice is to keep gently flossing and the bleeding should stop within two weeks. Your gums could be tender as a result of this new, but beneficial habit. If it continues, call us!

If the pain doesn't go away, you may be flossing too hard. It may be that your technique is not right, or you are not using the right type of floss. You could be inadvertently inflicting pain on your gums. It is hard to know the reason behind your pain without looking in your mouth. The best thing to do would be to call us so we can determine the problem behind your pain.
