FAQs about Neurotoxin Injections for TMJ / TMD

1. What is TMJ/TMD?
TMJ (temporomandibular joint) dysfunction, or TMD, refers to problems with the jaw joint or the muscles that control its movement. It can cause pain, jaw stiffness, headaches, and difficulty chewing or speaking.

2. How can Neurotoxin Injections help treat TMJ pain?
Neurotoxin injections work by relaxing the overactive muscles responsible for jaw clenching, tension, and headaches. When these muscles are relaxed, it can relieve pain, improve jaw mobility, and help reduce other symptoms of TMJ/TMD. Neurotoxin Injections have been shown to provide long-term relief for many people with chronic TMJ pain.

3. How long does it take for the Neurotoxin Injections to start working for TMJ pain?
You may start to notice improvement within a few days after your treatment, but the full effect typically takes about two weeks. Relief from the pain and tension generally lasts for about 3 months before another treatment is needed.

4. How long does a Neurotoxin Injection treatment session for TMJ take?
A typical session lasts around 10-15 minutes. The procedure is quick and requires minimal downtime, allowing you to immediately return to your regular activities.

5. Are Neurotoxin Injections for TMJ painful?
Most patients report that the injections cause minimal discomfort. The needles used are very small, and any pain from the injection itself is typically brief. If needed, we can apply a numbing agent to make the experience as comfortable as possible.

6. How many units of the Neurotoxin Injections will I need for TMJ treatment?
Most patients need between 40 to 50 units for TMJ treatment, but this number can vary depending on the severity of your symptoms and the muscles being treated. During your consultation, Dr. Wilhelm will assess your individual needs to determine the right dosage for you.

7. Will insurance cover Neurotoxin Injections for TMJ?
Because this treatment for TMJ is often considered a therapeutic rather than cosmetic treatment, some insurance plans may cover part of the cost. We recommend checking with your insurance provider, and our office is happy to help provide the necessary documentation if needed. While it's up to you if you'd like to try and bill your insurance, we do collect the full self-pay price of the injections up front at the time of treatment.

8. What can I expect after the treatment?
After your Neurotoxin Injections, you can resume your normal activities immediately. You may experience minor bruising or tenderness at the injection sites, but these symptoms usually resolve quickly. Full relief from TMJ symptoms typically takes about two weeks to set in and lasts for around three months.

9. Are there any side effects of Neurotoxin Injections for TMJ treatment?
Neuromodulators are generally considered safe, but as with any treatment, there may be some side effects. Common side effects include temporary bruising, headaches, or tenderness at the injection site. Serious side effects are rare but could include muscle weakness in areas near the injection site.

11. Who should avoid Neurotoxin Injections for TMJ treatment?
This treatment is not recommended for those who are pregnant, breastfeeding or have certain neuromuscular conditions such as ALS or myasthenia gravis. During your consultation, Dr. Wilhelm will discuss your medical history to determine if you are a candidate for this treatment.

12. How do I know if I qualify for Neurotoxin Injections at Smile More?
