With improvements in quality, porcelain has become the preferred material for many of our patients. They love the look and feel that porcelain provides including texture, shape and feel much like your natural enamel. Porcelain also possesses the same translucency and light properties as we see in natural enamel. We are happy to discuss all of your options in restoration, including the benefits that come with porcelain crowns.

What Is A Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a fixed prosthetic that we use to cover and surround a tooth, much like a cap. Crowns are a permanent fixture, meaning they are not removable, they are cemented in place for a firm bond. We use dental crowns to:
•  Improve Shape: Dental crowns can be used to perfect the look of your most visible teeth. With a crown, we can help a tooth look more even, more straight, whiter in color, fill gaps and overall perfected.
•  Cover Damage: Dental crowns can be used to cover damage including chipped teeth, fractures, cracks and intrinsic stains.
•  Provide Protection: Teeth can become weakened from decay and following root canal therapy. A dental crown can be used to provide a layer of protection to the tooth, helping preserve the structure and extend its life. Saving your tooth structure whenever possible is important.
•  Cover Cavities: When a cavity or decay is small, we can cover it with filling material. When a cavity or decay is large, the tooth will need some added protection. A dental crown can provide the strength a tooth needs to extend it’s life considerably.
•  Cover a Dental Implant: A missing tooth can be restored with the use of a surgically placed dental implant and a dental crown. The finished restoration is a fully independent tooth that is supported through the implant to the jawbone.
•  Part of a Traditional Dental Bridge: A traditional dental bridge consists of two crowns with false teeth between as one whole system.

Dental crowns come in a variety of materials including gold and metal alloys. While these materials are extremely durable and highly resistant to corrosion, they lack aesthetics. However, depending on the bite force needed, their durability and longevity make them a good option. We can discuss these options during your consultation.

Dental Crown Placement

Dental crowns are completed in two appointments. During the first appointment we will discuss what you are looking for, take an impression of the area and alter the natural tooth to fit the crown. We will place a temporary crown to be worn until the permanent one is completed. After about two weeks, when we have received the new crown, we will schedule an appointment for placement. Prior to placing, we will clean the area, dry fit the crown to check the bite, make any needed adjustments and then cement the crown in place.

In certain situations, we may be able to manufacture your crown in office while you wait for same day creation and placement. Ceramic crowns can be milled using CEREC for computerized milling.
